The Hannover Science Initiative frequently organizes top-class lecture events.

Since the beginning of 2007, eight universities and higher-education institutes in Hannover (Leibniz University, University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Hannover Medical School, University of Veterinary Medicine, University of Music, Drama and Media, Private University of Applied Sciences, Leibniz School of Business and GISMA Business School), the Geo-Centre Hannover, the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine, the Volkswagen Foundation, the Student Administration Hannover and the State Capital of Hannover have been have been actively involved in the Hannover Science Initiative.

Boost the attractiveness of Hannover as centre of scientific activity

The objective behind the Hannover Science Initiative is to boost the attractiveness of Hannover as centre of academic and scientific activity and enhance the general conditions for students. The initiative and a large proportion of the joint projects it involves are coordinated by the Science City Hannover department of the Lord Mayor’s Office.  

45,319 students in the state capital

With around 45,319 students (winter semester 2015/16) and 10,000 employees studying and working at its universities, Hannover figures among Germany's leading centres of scientific and academic activity. 5,162 of the students are from abroad, the majority of them from Asia and Eastern Europe.

Fostering of excellence clusters

The REBIRTH und Hearing4all excellence clusters are currently being fostered and sponsored in Hannover within the framework of the German government’s Excellence Initiative. The sponsoring of the QUEST excellence cluster and of the Hannover Biomedical Research School within this framework came to an end in late 2012, with the latter now under the supervision of Hannover Medical School. A diversity of non-university scientific institutions are based in Hannover.

  • November of Science

Every two years, Hannover becomes a showcase for some 70 facilities from universities, scientific, educational and cultural  institutions for three weeks in November, and around 150 events attract 45,000 visitors. The next November of Science will be taking place from 3 to 24 November in 2016.

  • Festival of Philosophy

Leibniz University Hannover and Hannover City Council have been organizing what has become one of Germany’s biggest philosophy-focussed events since 2008. The fourth Festival of Philosophy, under the title theme “Wie bitte geht Gerechtigkeit?” (“How is justice done”), took place from 13 to 16 March in 2014. Special guest was the American philosopher Cornel West.

  • Science in the Town Hall

The worlds of science and research are brought into focus in an unusual manner in an unusual place. The series of 'International Scientist in Hannover' events presents researchers from foreign countries. 

  • The “Hausmarke”:

The "Hausmarke" discount card entitles students studying in the Hannover Region to reduced admission to museums, public swimming pools, bars and events. Students wishing to obtain one can do so at the Tourist Information Hannover office (Ernst-August-Platz 8) on presentation of their ID card/passport and certificate of matriculation. “Hausmarke” cards which have already been issued retain their validity.  

  • Study and Stay

Every second student graduating from Hannover’s higher education institutes take up their initial employment in the Hannover Region. The “Study and Stay” initiative fosters an early networking of the spheres of business, science and university by way of excursions, career days and advisory offerings. The aim is to attract qualified personnel to work and live in Hannover as a key industrial and business location and  give young people sound career perspectives in the region. 

  • Welcome service for foreign students, academics and researchers

Foreign students and (guest) academics and researchers can look forward to a special welcome to and in Hannover. This embraces receptions at the universities and in the Town Hall as well as schooling and advice by appropriately qualified tutors in matters concerning the right of residence in collaboration with the Student Administration Hannover and the city administration.

  • Dual Career Network

The Dual Career Network provides support and assistance for dual-career couples from science and industry making a fresh career start in and around Hannover. This service is supervised and coordinated by Leibniz University Hannover.

  • Year of Leibniz 2016

Philosophy is part of the science-community in Hannover, since Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz spent 40 years of his life in Hannover. 2016 the City commemorates his death 300 years ago and recalls his tremendous achievements in math, philosophy, engineering, theology and politics within 100 events. Continually updated information about the program are available on (German). Videos all around Leibniz are uploaded on Related to the "Leibniz-anniversary", the endowed chair in the interest of highlighting the importance of Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz for the city, has been renewed for another two years. Prof. Dr. Wenchao Li. has been chairholder since 2010.

  • Summer University in "Leibniz City"

Since 2010 the Leibniz University Hannover and the state capital of Hannover host a program for guest students every august for the duration of three weeks. Scientists from different specialist areas offer several hours of lectures and workshops.
