An educational journey with a difference: Matthias Davids' production of Leonard Bernstein's "Comic Operetta" can be seen at the opera house. The work is based on Voltaire's satirical novel in which Leibniz satirises the image of the world.

The scholar explains his image of the world to "Candide"

Leonard Bernstein's "Candide" premiered 1956 in New York. At the State Opera Hannover the famous operetta can be seen in a version of Matthias Davids. The director is famous for his productions "Guys and Dolls" and "How to succeed in Business without really trying". The production is conducted by general music director Karen Kamensek who is, like Bernstein, an US-American citizen. Besides Sung-Keun Park in the main role as Candide, Ania Vegry as Cunegonde, Christopher Tonkin as Maximilian and Frank Schneider as Voltaire can be seen amongst others.

Candide grows up a bastard in a castle and enjoys the same education and privileges as the legitimate offpsrings of the local baron of Westphalia, Maximilian and Cunegonde. His love towards the last one evokes a catastrophe though. Maximilian reveals the secret affair to his parents and therewith is responsible for the exile of Candide. Disappointed but not discouraged, Candide begins his journey. Still optimistic, he keeps travelling. Not even when he accidentally signs up for the Bulgarian army and by that is partly responsible for the massacre of his beloved relatives, inclusive Cunegonde, or in Lissabon, where he nearly gets executed or in Buenos Aires, Montevideo or Surinam – he never loses his optimism. It is enough to know that Cunegonde is still alive. And his ultimate goal is and will remain to win her back...
