My Fair Lady

At Hannover's Opera House: Frederick Loewe's Musical about a young woman's ascent from the filthy streets of London to the parlours of the upper class.

What is left of a person's personality, after he or she has undergone a wide-ranging (though voluntary) transformation? What are our aspirations and ideals in life? And how much are we willing to sacrifice in order to achieve a higher social standing? These are the essential questions posed in Frederick Loewe's Musical "My Fair Lady", based on George Bernard Shaw's play "Pygmalion".

The Plot

Eliza Doolittle is a flower girl in Edwardian London, verbal communication is vital in her line of work. Enter Professor Higgins, who finds a lot to criticize about her language and proposes to cure her from her vulgar speech and Cockney accent. In a wager with Colonel Pickering, Higgins claims that, in six months, he can teach her to speak properly, turn her a into a lady and successfully introduce her to the local high society. And so Eliza struggles through endless exercises like "The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain" or "In Hertford, Hereford and Hampshire, hurricanes hardly ever happen". And – needless to say – her manners need a lot of polishing, too ...
