Per Mertesacker Farewell Match
Having won the 2014 World Cup as well as the DFB Cup and the FA Cup, Per Mertesacker is set to hang up his boots after 15 years as a professional footballer. With 100 international matches and over 500 appearances for Hannover 96, Werder Bremen and the Arsenal Football Club in London under his belt, the “Big Fucking German”, as he’s affectionately known in England, is retiring from the sport – but not without saying a proper farewell to his fans and followers.
And where better for the farewell match of an esteemed “96er”, who worked his way up through the Reds’ youth system, than the place it all began: Hannover’s very own HDI Arena. This choice of the Reds home ground as the venue also makes sense given the huge demand, plus it’s a fitting backdrop for the encounter between “Merte’s 96 Friends” and “Per’s World XI”.
In line with the motto “Playing fora good cause”, the ticket proceeds will be donated to the Per Mertesacker Foundation, which supports the social integration of children in the Hannover region. Spectators will get the chance to see former stars such as the former captain of the German national team, Michael Ballack, and of course Per Mertesacker, who will be taking to the pitch for the last time.
