In all the most popular sports, Hannover is well-represented by first-class teams. Hannover’s amateur sports fans can also rightly claim to be in the top league.
… are guaranteed when the footballers of Hannover 96 are going for goal in the HDI arena. “Die Recken”, the handballers of TSV Hannover-Burgdorf, guarantee pure suspense and energy. Ice hockey, rugby and basketball also provide thrilling top-class sport. From April to October, the Neue Bult in Langenhagen is the arena for thoroughbreds on one of the most modern racecourses in Germany. Amateur sportsmen and women have the opportunity to compete against top-class athletes at major events such as the HAJ Hannover Marathon and the triathlon competitions at Lake Maschsee and Wasserstadt Limmer.
The same is true of the Steelman cross-country race, a challenge consisting of climbing, balancing and other arduous obstacles. The “Nacht von Hannover” is an enthralling night cycle on a circuit in front of the New Town Hall. The following day, the “ProAm – Dein Tag” race through the region is open to all cycling enthusiasts. The dragon boat festival, the biggest of its kind in Germany, and the beach volleyball cup also help create a vibrant atmosphere in the city.
Sport for every taste
Roughly 290,000 people are members of over 1000 sports clubs. From aikido to zumba, everyone who wants to get active can find a sport to suit them. Paths around Lake Maschsee and in the municipal forest of Eilenriede are popular with joggers, walkers and skaters. There are also many hiking and cycling trails throughout the region, and there is plenty on offer for equestrians too. Very popular events for all include skate by night for inline skaters and the Sparkassen-Laufpass series of fun runs. Fans of waterskiing and wakeboarding can show off their skills at the Blauer See in Garbsen.
Golfers will find a multitude of clubs in the region, where they can pitch and putt in beautiful surroundings for an affordable green fee. Top venues for climbers include the escaladrome BLOC:WERK, the KletterCAMPUS and Deutscher Alpenverein’s GriffReich climbing centre. The Springe high ropes offer a course of tree trunks and wire ropes up to 20 metres high purely for fun or for staff training. The SeaTree climbing and adventure park in Mardorf at Lake Steinhude invites you to try tantalising balancing acts at 27 stations with three difficulty levels.
