A high-performing economic hub in the heart of Europe with ideal infrastructure connections, a great variety of leisure activities and an affordable, yet high quality standard of residential properties combined with a unique proximity to nature - these are Hannover’s strengths.
The trade fair and conference venue in the heart of Europe
Hannover can look back on more than 60 years as a leading international trade fair location. The city boasts the largest and one of the most modern exhibition centers in the world, with more than 460,000 m² indoor and 58,000 m² outdoor space. Flagship technology fairs such as the CeBIT and HANNOVER MESSE are major innovation hubs. Other leading trade fairs such as DOMOTEX, LIGNA, BIOTECHNICA, CeMAT and IAA Commercial Vehicles regularly demonstrate the important role that this location plays as a stimulant for the economy.
Hannover Region also plays a leading role as a congress and conference venue and can offer a wide choice of locations. From the prizewinning exhibition center, to Herrenhausen Palace, Hannover Adventure Zoo and Hannover Congress Centrum, the metropolis on the banks of the River Leine features a whole range of attractive event venues. Other places of interest, such as Herrenhausen Gardens or the bustling city center, and mega events such as the Maschsee Lake Festival or the International Fireworks Competition provide endless opportunities to create a varied program.
First-class business, research and science location
The Hannover region stands out as an innovative industrial base, service industry center and trading hub for national and international markets. As a trade fair city, Hannover injects significant momentum into the economy, and it is also one of Germany’s most important locations for the insurance sector. In terms of spending power, turnover and convenience of location, Hannover is one of the most successful retail trade locations in Germany. Internationally acclaimed brands such as Continental and Sennheiser are representative of the region’s innovative drive and even some U.S. companies, such as Johnson Controls, Exxon Mobile and MTU, have their company headquarters here.
No other economic region places such a strong focus on the health sector. First-class research centers have been established in the region, such as the Hannover Medical School (MHH) and the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (Foundation). The International Neuroscience Institute (INI) Center for Neurology is one of the world’s best equipped specialist clinics. Moreover, Hannover is continuing to invest in its health facilities.
The tertiary education institutes in Hannover – which include four universities, one university of applied sciences and arts, as well as various high-ranking private academies – offer degree courses in virtually every conceivable subject and are known for their excellent academic quality. With approx. 22,000 students Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hannover is the largest education institute in Hannover. Events such as the IdeenExpo and the Maker Faire encourage youngsters to take an interest in science and technology.
Curtain up on a fantastic cultural year in Hannover
Since 2015, the capital city of Lower Saxony has proudly borne the title of UNESCO City of Music. There is music in the air in Hannover all year round: every year on Ascension Day, Hannover is transformed into the capital of jazz when “enercity swinging hannover” attracts tens of thousands people to listen to top-notch jazz ensembles.
“Simply making music” is the motto of the global music festival “Fête de la Musique” on June 21 every year. The opera and drama of Hannover State Theatre are leading lights in the German theatre world. Perfectly cast ensembles, inspired directors, authors and choreographers repeatedly deliver productions that set international standards. Unique exhibits and spectacular exhibitions have earned Hannover a reputation as a city of art and museums - whether art, technology, history or treasures from exotic cultures and the natural world.
The famous Herrenhausen Gardens are also a superb setting for prestigious open-air cultural events.
Green city and perfect place to live
City forests, parks and recreational areas make Hannover the greenest city in Germany, where you can experience nature and at the same time enjoy the benefits of an urban lifestyle.
The Eilenriede is a tempting, lusciously green oasis: with 642 hectares, the “green lung” of the city is nearly twice as big as New York’s Central Park. Lake Maschsee, too, features unspoiled natural habitats and recreational activities in close proximity to the city. Lake Steinhude is an attractive destination in the holiday region, offering unique outdoor adventures: whether for a family excursion, a boat trip, swimming, cycling or exploring the surroundings.
Likewise, the Deister mountain range with its many cycling and hiking routes is a popular local recreational destination.
