As the leading architect of the Royal House of Hanover, Georg Laves had a significant influence on urban development and planning beginning in 1814. His buildings and structures in the Neoclassical style can be found throughout Hanover and the surrounding area. In addition to his famous structures—such as the Opera House, the Waterloo Column, the renovation of Leineschloss, and the library pavilion at the entrance to the Berggarten—he gave Hanover a new layout through his expansion of the city center. In this way, the German architect, urban planner, and civil engineer paved the way for the city’s continued growth. He also had the large squares in Hanover laid out: Waterloo Square, later renamed Ernst-August Square, Opera Square, and Georgsplatz.
