Nanas

Buxom curves, luminous colours: the three Nanas on the Leibnizufer have become one of Hannover’s most popular landmarks since 1974.

They were not always so celebrated: many Hannoverians took a distinct dislike to the voluminous sculptures created by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle. This grass roots protest gave rise to intense debate about art in public spaces – with a happy end: Hannoverians now consider the Nanas to be part of the family. The artist was made an honorary citizen of Hannover in 2000. She expressed her gratitude by bequeathing 300 of her works to the Sprengel Museum Hannover.

Art-interested persons can do a detour on the sculpture mile which leads from here to Königsworther Platz. You will fi nd open-air art of eight reknown artists like Erich Hauser or John Henry. Cult meeting place on Saturdays On Saturdays, this place is full of the hustle and bustle of Germany’s oldest fl ea market. From the early hours through to the afternoon, people buy and sell virtually everything here. A cult meeting place for the curious, strollers, and bargain hunters!
