Global thinking, interdisciplinary research: the spirit of Leibniz! Nearly 29,700 students are currently studying at the nine faculties of Leibniz University Hannover. In addition, over 4,000 scientists are working at more than 150 institutes in the city.

More than 160 first degree and partial programmes

The university was founded with 64 scholars in 1831 as a higher vocational school of the former Kingdom of Hannover. Today the university offers a wide variety of fields of study: More than 160 first degree and partial programmes from natural sciences and engineering technology to humanities, social sciences and law to economics. The 'Welfenschloss' palace has been the university main building since 1879.

International orientation

About 350 professors and numerous assistant lecturers prepare students to attain good qualifications for their professional and social prospects. The Bologna Process has introduced a growing number of Bachelor and Master degree programmes. Internationalism is a huge priority at the Leibniz University with a multitude of worldwide joint ventures.

Top-level research

In research, Leibniz University concentrates on nationally and internationally competitive projects. The foundation of Hannover Centre for Production Technology (PZH) and the Laser Zentrum Hannover are good examples of successful facilities in recent years. Hannover scientists carry out top-level research in collaborative research centres sponsored by the German Research Foundation. Particular emphasis is laid on close collaboration with the industry, preparing students for their professional careers.
