The castle was built in 1637, then expanded and rebuilt several times. From 1837 to 1866 it was the residence of the kings of Hanover. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz came and went here as a librarian and privy councillor. The state parliament of Lower Saxony has been in the palace since 1992.
