International Neuroscience Institute (INI)

The International Neuroscience Institute Hannover (INI) is a private neurosurgical clinic for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with neurological diseases. It was founded in 1998, and the building was officially opened during Expo 2000. It cost around 140 million Deutsche Marks to build this centre for brain research and the treatment of neurological diseases, which is considered one of the best-equipped specialist clinics in the world.

The brain of the city

The INI has departments for neurosurgery, neurology, neuroradiology, neurorehabilitation, orthopaedics, anaesthesia and surgery. More than 1,500 patients, half of them from abroad, undergo surgery at the clinic every year. Situated in Medical Park Hannover, the centre is an impressive sight for visitors. The building is 38 metres and nine storeys high, with a design intended to evoke the outlines of the human brain in abstract form. Its grounds feature a small park with a pond, fern garden and ornamental Japanese cherry trees. Hannover Medical School and the Fraunhofer Institute are in the immediate vicinity.
