Hannover is squarely on the map for logistics companies. The Fraunhofer Institute in Nuremberg views the Hannover region as one of the most important German logistics hubs, and the large number of newly opened sites in recent years confirms this. Many factors come together to make the Hannover region an excellent location for logistics companies, including its central position, outstanding infrastructure for all modes of transport, and exceptionally well connected commercial premises.

In its economic survey, the Hannover region tallied some 61,700 employees subject to social insurance contributions (i.e. in proper, formal employment) in 2,500 businesses in the sector in 2022. Important freight forwarders and transport companies include DHL, Kühne+Nagel, DB Schenker, Dachser, UPS, TNT, Hellmann, Hermes and DPD.

In addition to the parcel companies, there are also companies specialising in industrial and retail logistics, e-commerce and contract logistics. The region is also home to national and European distribution centres for VW Nutzfahrzeuge, Mercedes Benz, Amazon, Arvato, Bahlsen, Lyreco, Sonepar, Weatherford and Delticom.

And there many logistics-related research institutes such as the Institute of Transport and Automation Technology, the Institut für Integrierte Produktion and the Institute of Production Systems and Logistics.
