Nord/LB is the leading universal bank in northern Germany. As the state bank for the states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, it supports the public sector in municipal financing and performs the role of a central bank for the savings banks in these two states and also in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

As a commercial bank, Nord/LB provides a comprehensive range of financial services for private, corporate, institutional and public-sector clients. In addition to aircraft financing, Nord/LB is mainly involved in the energy, infrastructure, industrial and real estate sectors.

Der im Juni 2002 eröffnete Hauptsitz der NORD/LB in Hannover.

Nord/LB’s distinctive headquarters on Friedrichswall opened in 2002. The building has space for around 1,500 employees on 17 floors. It was designed by Behnisch, Behnisch & Partner and won the Niedersächsischer Staatspreis für Architektur, a state-sponsored architecture prize, in its opening year. The office complex includes retail shops and restaurants and an inner courtyard with three small ponds.

Nord/LB has a heritage dating back centuries. Norddeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale was formed in 1970 by the merger of four forerunner institutions: Braunschweigische Staatsbank (founded in 1765), Hannoversche Landeskreditanstalt (founded in 1840), Niedersächsische Landesbank Girozentrale (founded in 1917) and Niedersächsische Wohnungskreditanstalt Stadtschaft (founded in 1918). Under a state agreement between Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt in 1992, Nord/LB also assumed the duties of a state bank for Saxony-Anhalt.
