Das Hauptstaatsarchiv wurde von 1713 bis 1721 errichtet, um die Archivalien aus der Residenz in Celle mit den Urkunden und Akten des Calenberger Archivs zusammenzuführen. Der heute vorhandene Quertrakt wurde erst zwischen 1889 und 1893 ergänzt. Heute lagern im Archiv 41.000 Urkunden, 40.000 laufende Meter Akten und 90.000 Karten aus 11 Jahrhunderten Niedersächsischer Geschichte.

The main state archive of Lower Saxony was constructed 1713-1721 according to a preliminary design by Louis Remy de la Fosse, to create a building to combine the archives from the Celle residence and the documents from the Calenberg achive. Its transept was built as late as about 1890. Currently, the listed archive building contains approx. 41,000 documents, 40,000 metres of files and 90,000 maps from eleven centuries of Lower Saxony history.
