Hannover is one of Germany's leading art and museum hubs, one of the country's greenest cities, and offers a wide variety of recreational activities.

Hannover, City of Culture and Art

Did you know? Since 2014, Hannover has held the title of UNESCO City of Music and is part of the international UNESCO Creative Cities Network alongside Glasgow, Seville, Bogotá, Bologna, Ghent, and Brazzaville. The opera and drama departments of the Hannover State Theater are leading institutions in the German theater scene. Throughout the city, there are numerous private theaters that present exciting productions ranging from light comedy to avant-garde.

Unique exhibits and spectacular exhibitions have earned Hannover a reputation as a city of art and museums. A wide variety of exhibitions, organized by institutions such as the internationally renowned Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Museum August Kestner, the Kestnergesellschaft, the Wilhelm Busch – German Museum of Caricature and Critical Graphic Arts, and the State Museum of Lower Saxony, take visitors on a journey of discovery.

The famous Herrenhausen Gardens also serve as a superb setting for prestigious open-air cultural events. The Baroque gardens provide the perfect venue for the Kunstfestspiele Herrenhausen arts festival, as well as for the International Fireworks Competition and open-air theater performances.

One of Germany's Greenest Cities

Green spaces account for 11.36 percent of the city’s total area—Hannover is one of Germany’s greenest cities. Hannover’s green character is most evident in the Eilenriede city forest: covering nearly 1,600 acres, the city’s green lung is almost twice as large as New York’s Central Park. This abundance of green space is also one of the main reasons why 89 percent of Hannover’s residents say they are very happy to live here.

Impressive Variety

The wide variety of recreational facilities also helps explain why the people of Hannover are so happy with their city.

Hanover's Old Town

In this metropolis on the Leine River, visitors have an endless array of top-tier cultural and sporting events to choose from, an impressive number of first-rate museums, fantastic shopping in one of Germany’s largest pedestrian zones, and the picturesque Old Town district. Premium tourist attractions include the famous Herrenhausen Gardens and Hannover’s unique Adventure Zoo, while legendary events such as the Maschsee Lake Festival and the world’s largest Marksmen’s Fair never fail to attract large numbers of tourists and locals.

Other notable features of this trade fair destination and economic hub include short travel times between locations, an excellent regional transportation system, and a variety of high-quality yet affordable housing options.
