Spanning about 99 hectares, Hannover offers plenty of space to play, dig, run around, and kick a ball around.

The city’s playgrounds, soccer fields, and play parks offer a wide range of activities: zip lines, sand and mud areas, water features, climbing structures, swings, suspension bridges, playhouses, and entire climbing worlds. Here, children can test their limits, explore their surroundings through play, learn social skills, simply let off steam, and even be a little louder sometimes. Creating attractive play opportunities for children is a particularly important task for the Department of Environment and Urban Greenery in a major city, because children bring life to the city.
Playgrounds
There are currently 448 playgrounds in Hannover. They are plentiful in every neighborhood and can be found “on almost every corner,” and can be reached within a few minutes from home. To ensure that these facilities maintain high standards, the playgrounds are regularly cleaned and inspected. Playground sponsors also play an important role in this process.
Every year, around two new playgrounds are built across the city, and existing older playgrounds are also completely or partially renovated. The special program "Ecological upgrading of playgrounds and schoolyards" is an important building block for revamping outdated and unattractive playgrounds in particular.
The playground bylaws are intended to counteract misuse of playgrounds. It serves to protect children and young people and is intended to increase the feeling of safety among children and accompanying persons. This way, administrative offenses can be punished.
Soccer fields
There are 142 public soccer fields in Hannover. These fields provide a space for young recreational players in particular to let off steam and practice. And with ball-cage fences and goals, balls don’t get lost as easily on these fields.
Notes on use
According to the playground regulations and on-site signage, children up to the age of 18 are permitted on playgrounds from 7 am to 8 pm. The same applies to football pitches.
