On the high bank

The “Hohe Ufer” is a road that runs along the eastern bank of the Leine River. Throughout history, this area has been closely associated with horses; the “Pferdestraße,” the “Roßmühle,” and the “Marstall” are all located directly adjacent to the Hohe Ufer. This was also the site of the so-called “Pferdeschwemme,” where horses were led into the water after work to be cleaned and watered. In the summer, the overheated horses were cooled off in the Schwemme. Today, the sculpture “Mann mit Pferd” (Man with Horse) by Hermann Scheuernstuhl still serves as a reminder of the presence of horses at this site.
