1941: 1,200 Jewish residents of Hanover were forced to give up their possessions within a few hours and move into a so-called “Judenhaus.” The only household items they were allowed to keep were a bed, a chair, a dresser, some linens, a few items of clothing, and dishes. The dilapidated condition of the half-timbered house and the overcrowding created unbearable living conditions.
