Am Hohen Ufer
The “Hohe Ufer” is a riverside street that runs along the eastern bank of the Leine. Throughout history, this location has been repeatedly associated with horses; the “Pferdestraße,” the “Roßmühle,” and the “Marstall” all border directly on the Hohe Ufer. This was also the site of the so-called “Pferdeschwemme,” where horses were led into the water after work to be cleaned and watered. In the summer, the overheated horses were cooled off in the wash. Today, the sculpture “Man with Horse” by Hermann Scheuernstuhl still serves as a reminder of the presence of horses at this site. The transformation of this place can be admired in a virtual gallery.
