Background information
Contrary to what history might suggest, the name of this street originated with what was then known as the “Nikolaikapelle”—the patron saint “Saint Nicholas” became “Sünte Klages” and eventually “Am Klagesmarkt.”
A Place of Community – A Starting Point for Change: In Hannover, what was once an execution site and an old shooting range became one of the most important gathering points for mass rallies, May Day demonstrations, and clashes between the NSDAP and the public between 1920 and 1945. Even today, Klagesmarkt remains a traditional venue for regular weekly markets and events, as well as a key gathering place for labor and political demonstrations, and is home to numerous important institutions.
Description of the work
Praeteritum Mobile is thus intended to be a project that brings all these historical events together, evoking a collage of leaflets that once called for community and solidarity. “Praeteritum” means “the past,” and “Perpetuum Mobile”—meaning “perpetual motion”—is meant to capture the ever-advancing flow and transformation of history.
