Music for the ears

New house

If you walk past the Neues Haus, you can almost always hear music from the HMTMH rehearsal rooms. I visualize this experience in my project.

New house

Background information

Previously, the square in front of the University of Music, Drama, and Media was called “Emmichplatz,” after the Nazis named it in 1933 after the controversial General Otto von Emmich. Since March 1, 2019, the new name has been “Neues Haus.” The Green Party had previously advocated in the district council for the square to be named after the Jewish violinist Alma Rosé, but fell just short of a majority. The name “Neues Haus” recalls a popular restaurant, parts of which can still be seen today in front of the university.

In my project, however, I would like to focus mainly on the music academy for which the square is known to most people today.

Description of the work

By tapping on the smartphone, floating ears of different skin tones appear, which move rhythmically to the music. The ears symbolize both listening to music and the design of the conservatory, which is shaped like an auricle. On the soundtrack, a band rehearsal of the HMTMH studio big band can be heard by moving closer to the ears.
