Background information

Edwin Oppler was a Jewish German architect who lived and worked in Hannover from 1849 onward. Between 1864 and 1870, he built what was then known as the “New Synagogue” on Bergstraße in the Calenberger Neustadt district.

Description of the work

"Remember us" is intended to commemorate the synagogues and prayer houses of Hanover’s Jewish community, which were built and repeatedly destroyed. Edwin Oppler’s “New Synagogue,” in particular, made a significant statement due to its size and its location on what was then the centrally located Posthof.
