The Leine River

Test operation of the Leinewelle in February 2023.

Surfing right in the heart of the city—the Leine wave at the Hohe Ufer makes it possible.

The Leinewelle is a technical facility on the Leine River at the Hohe Ufer in Hanover’s Old Town. With this standing wave, the Leinewelle Association has created Northern Germany’s first surfing spot on a natural river.
Modeled after Munich’s Eisbach, the Leinewelle was completed in October 2022 and has been in trial operation ever since. With an opening weekend full of activities and events, the Leinewelle officially opened on May 1, 2023.

Surf spot for pros and beginners

Two waves with different heights and levels of difficulty allow both experienced professionals and beginners to surf. Courses can also be booked through the university sports department. No surfing equipment can be hired on site outside of the courses.

An annual membership in the association ensures 24 free surf spots per year. Individual tickets can be booked beyond this or for those who are not regularly interested.
