Ice skating in winter

Ice skating has a long tradition in the Region Hannover and offers a wide range of opportunities during the winter months for relaxing leisure time, athletic activities, or outings with family and friends. Three locations are of particular interest: the ice rink at the Pferdeturm in Hannover, the Mellendorf Ice Rink in Wedemark, and the Lauenau Ice Rink in the Schaumburg region.

Ice Rink at the Pferdeturm

The ice rink at the Pferdeturm in Hannover-Kleefeld is one of the region’s most historic ice sports venues. In addition to hosting the Hannover Indians’ ice hockey games, it offers regular public skating sessions during the season, which runs from September through March. Adults pay about €5.00 for a session; skates can be rented for €5.00; helmets are also available for €2.50. The atmosphere combines sporting tradition with a family-friendly environment, making the rink suitable for both recreational skaters and visitors who appreciate the special ambiance of a classic ice rink.

Mellendorf ice rink

The Mellendorf Ice Rink—officially known as the ARS Arena—is located about 20 km north of Hannover and is home to the Hannover Scorpions. In addition to club sports, the arena offers a wide range of public skating sessions available every day of the week. Visitors can rent skates, use skating aids for children, and access additional equipment. Regular ice discos and special events are also popular, further expanding the range of recreational activities. The combination of a diverse program and good transportation access makes Mellendorf a versatile destination for ice skating enthusiasts.

The Lauenau Ice Rink is located west of the Region Hannover and opens its approximately 900-square-meter ice surface to visitors during the season, from early November through late February. The rink offers regular skating hours, ice discos, curling, and events such as children’s birthday parties. For guests without their own equipment, skate rentals are available, with sizes ranging from 27 to 50. The rental fee is usually €3.00. The ice rink is particularly well-suited for family outings and complements the region’s winter sports options with a quiet, easily accessible alternative.
