Take a trip back to the 1920s with the “Time Machine”

H-STORY

This tour offers a fascinating glimpse into Hannover’s past and opens up entirely new perspectives on the city’s history.

What did the Leine riverbank near the Historical Museum look like 100 years ago?

H-STORY

Starting in May, passersby will be able to explore 1920s panoramas right on the spot.
The “H-STORY” project brings old cityscapes back to their original locations. Beginning May 1, 2024, two “Time Cylinders” will be on display along Am Hohen Ufer, near the Leinewelle and directly behind the Historical Museum. The cylindrical panels are mounted around two lampposts and feature brief visual and textual information along with a QR code for the respective location. By scanning the code with a smartphone or tablet, users are instantly transported to a meticulously reconstructed, historical 360-degree panorama from the year 1925.

The buildings that once stood on the opposite bank of the Leine become visible again, as do the Leine island known as “Little Venice” and the historic state of the old armory. When compared directly with today’s views, the dramatic urban development of the past 100 years becomes strikingly clear. Those who wish to linger a little longer in the year 1925 can view brief information about former buildings or historical photos. Contemporary texts are also available, such as those by Erich Maria Remarque, who lived in Hannover in the early 1920s.

The service is based on a freely accessible, ad-free website and, apart from the necessary internet connection, is free of charge. H-STORY originated as a private initiative by Oliver Sprigade, a graphic designer and illustrator from Hannover, and is supported by the Hannover Historical Museum. Those who are unable to view the panoramas in person can also access them via the website h-story.de.
