Places of remembrance

Throughout the city of Hannover, numerous memorial sites bear witness to the Nazi era and its aftermath.

The term “place of remembrance” is not limited to a physical, tangible location: it also encompasses collective memories of events, figures, rituals, or symbols that help shape the identity of the respective community and regularly evoke and strengthen collective memories. These places of remembrance play a special role in the public commemoration of the Nazi era, its victims, and its consequences, as well as in upholding the democratic foundations of our society.
