Commemoration

Hiroshima memorial grove

On August 6, 1945, nearly the entire city of Hiroshima was destroyed by an atomic bomb; three days later, another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. The state capital of Hannover has been linked to Hiroshima through a sister city partnership for over 30 years and, as part of this partnership, regularly commemorates the destruction of the Japanese city and the dangers of nuclear weapons.

The “Hiroshima Memorial Grove”: The 110 cherry trees in the Hiroshima Memorial Grove are intended to commemorate the 110,000 people who died immediately as a result of the atomic bombing of Hanover’s sister city, Hiroshima, on August 6, 1945. In 1992, a memorial stone in the form of a granite slab, taken directly from the blast site, was erected.

The idea to create a memorial grove emerged during the peace movement. The doctors’ initiative “Doctors Warn Against Nuclear War” and the “Hiroshima Alliance” launched a fundraising campaign. With the support of the City of Hannover, the project was then able to be realized. The Hiroshima Memorial Grove is of particular significance especially on “Hiroshima Day,” which takes place in Hannover every year on August 6. On this day, various activities and events are held here.
