Holocaust memorial on Opernplatz

Commemoration by a school class at the Holocaust memorial on Opernplatz

The memorial commemorates 1,935 people from Hannover who were persecuted and murdered by the Nazis as "Jews" between 1933 and 1945.

Holocaust memorial on Opernplatz

Since October 9, 1994, the memorial on Opernplatz in the city center has commemorated the Jewish victims of National Socialism from Hannover. It was created on the initiative of the "Memoriam" association. The artist Michelangelo Pistoletto designed it in 1993 as a walk-in pyramid. Instead of a peak, there is a stylized gate at its center where two people can sit facing each other.

On October 25, 2013, an information panel was also unveiled directly at the memorial. It features a historical overview, background information on Jewish life in Hannover, anti-Semitism, and persecution, as well as explanations of the memorial’s creation and details about some of the names on the memorial pyramid.

Further information on the Holocaust Memorial can be found in the brochure available for download and on the information boards at the Holocaust Memorial.
