District

Südstadt

A little bit of Eilenriede and lots of lake—that’s what makes Südstadt such a great place to live.

Südstadt offers the perfect blend of urban and natural recreation; yet, via Marienstraße and Hildesheimer Straße, you can still reach the city center in just five minutes. Rumor has it that singles in particular favor this neighborhood—perhaps because jogging around Lake Maschsee is such a great way to meet people... Lately, more and more students have been drawn to Südstadt, even though it’s relatively quiet here. What else? The Eisfabrik offers theater, art, and culture, and every Friday you can experience Hannover’s largest weekly market at Stephansplatz.

City life

The district’s most popular attractions clearly include Lake Maschsee, the Eilenriede, Stephansplatz—where the weekly market is held regularly—the Sprengel Museum, the Gilde Brewery, the Aegi, and the Eisfabrik. People love to gather here to spend their free time.

Culinary delights: restaurants, bars, cafés

The Südstadt also has plenty to offer in terms of dining: Mimi's Thaikitchen, LaSall, Abendmahl, Baba, and Café Gleichklang are just a few of the popular spots. The nightlife here is also lively. If you like to go out for a glass of wine in the evening or just want to relax with friends, head to “die bar” at the Dormero Hotel, Goldfisch, Glüxkind, or Bar Seña.

Shopping

When it comes to shopping, PorzellanCafé, Esplanade, SofaLoft, Anne Behne and Wollkultur are the places to go.

Culture: The Maschsee Festival

The annual highlight in the Südstadt is the Maschseefest: Under the motto “Around the World in 19 Days,” the festival features cuisines from East Asia, Italy, Mexico, Spain, Ireland, and the Caribbean. Exciting bars and restaurants offer far more than just tempting food: Trendy DJs provide a relaxed musical party and entertainment program every day. The stages around the lake guarantee top-notch live entertainment.

For those interested in culture, the Sprengel Museum, the August Kestner Museum, or the State Museum are the places to go.

Nature

Of course, the Maschsee and the Eilenriede forest, which borders the Südstadt district, are particular highlights—they invite visitors to linger in every season.

Nightlife

Especially during the Maschsee Festival, there’s plenty going on in the Südstadt even at night. If you’re looking for a good time, you can reach downtown in just 5 minutes by train.
