"Kunst umgehen" is an educational program focused on art in public spaces. It is commissioned by the Cultural Office of the State Capital of Hannover.
The art education program on art in public spaces "Kunst umgehen" will run again this year from May to October. The artists and art mediators Anna Grunemann and Christiane Oppermann will realize their formats live and on site.
The digital content is curated as a magazine and archive at www.kunst-umgehen.digital by Thomas Kaestle, an art educator.

The history
Since 2013, the team behind the “Kunst umgehen” outreach program for art in public spaces has been developing new formats on a regular basis, commissioned by the Cultural Office of the State Capital of Hannover, to create fresh ways of engaging with art.
The digital offering introduced in the Corona years has been continued by cultural scientist Thomas Kaestle alone since 2024, while artists and art educators Anna Grunemann and Christiane Oppermann invite interested people of all generations to take part in the events in the urban space:
They offer not only overviews and in-depth analyses of historical sites in Hanover, but also allow visitors to connect this art in new ways with their own everyday experiences of the city and society, thereby experiencing it in a contemporary context.
They also hold numerous discussions with artists and experts from neighboring disciplines, share current observations and reflections on the contexts of art in public spaces and ask with a broad horizon for ways to think the topic into the future.
Guided tours, talks and performances
The GPS format focuses on a single object in the urban space and, like the Special Topic, offers an in-depth exploration of specific works, themes, and contexts through conversations with artists and experts from related disciplines. In Sculpture Transfer, Anna Grunemann and Christiane Oppermann (AG&CO) engage performatively with selected works and subsequently invite visitors to join in a discussion. The Overview features guided tours conducted as dialogues, with guest artists introducing fresh perspectives this year.
