The work “Glenkiln Cross” by Henry Moore (b. 1898 in Castleford, Great Britain – d. 1986) was acquired by the collector and patron Bernhard Sprengel following “documenta II” and donated to the city of Hanover. The location was chosen in consultation with the artist. Moore placed equal emphasis on a natural setting and a specific site. The landscaped area in the heart of Maschpark fulfills both criteria; it corresponds to the site of the first cast, which gave the sculpture its name: Glenkiln is a park in Scotland where significant sculptures blend into the landscape. In Hannover, the object is highlighted above all by its tall pedestal, which allows for both a view from below and a distant perspective. In the initially familiar form of the (Celtic) cross, fragments of a human body can be discerned. » Location: Maschpark (viewpoint opposite City Hall)
