Horst Antes | Figure September 1

Horst Antes (born 1936 in Heppenheim) is considered a co-founder of the new figurative painting movement in Germany. For a long time, his characteristic “cephalopods” were virtually his only subject: consisting primarily of heads and feet that seem to merge into one another, they appear in his paintings and prints as well as in his sculptural works. “Figure September 1” was installed in 1972 as part of the “Street Art Program” at the corner of Kramerstraße and Knochenhauerstraße in the Old Town, but its delicate aluminum alloy suffered damage there. It was transferred to the Sprengel Museum Hannover in 1983 and placed on the sidewalk near the entrance. There, it blends subtly into the dynamics of the urban space and becomes a monument to physical and mental agility. Other works in Hanover: “Head with Twelve Eyes” and “Head in the Hand” on Georgsplatz (see “Art in the City 4”). » Location: Kurt-Schwitters-Platz (in front of the entrance to the Sprengel Museum Hannover)
