The installation by Stephan Huber (born in 1952 in Lindenberg) was created to mark the 150th anniversary of the Künstlerhaus Hannover in 2006. It is the result of a competition organized for this purpose by the Kunstverein Hannover and the Lower Saxony Foundation. When darkness falls, the chandelier becomes part of the street lighting. It is also movable and is set swinging like a bell before events at the Künstlerhaus. The work derives its subtle references to the site from numerous polarities such as inside/outside, public/private, or functional/non-functional. As the Künstlerhaus’s flagship, it seems to almost proclaim culture with baroque splendor, thus becoming an ironic commentary: overloaded, expensive, heavy—and at the same time imaginative, stimulating, extraordinary, autonomous, defiant, and different. The work is partially funded by the Stiftung Niedersachsen, which is based at the Künstlerhaus. » Location: Sophienstraße (in front of the Künstlerhaus)
