Fritz Wotruba | Standing figure

The sculpture by Fritz Wotruba (b. 1907 in Vienna, Austria – d. 1975) was initially installed at the Kreuzkirche as part of the “Street Art Program” and, after a year, moved to the Nordmannpassage, where it could be encountered immediately and unexpectedly, yet could only partially unfold its impact within the confined urban space of the passage. Nevertheless, the change in how it was perceived due to the change of location was an interesting phenomenon: near the church building, it is often interpreted as a cross; in the everyday environment, it became a body, thus corresponding to the artist’s overall body of work, in which the foundations of his geometric abstractions are often figurative.
