Hans-Jürgen Breuste | Bogside '69

This work by Hans-Jürgen Breuste (born in 1933 in Hanover) was created to mark the 20th anniversary of Amnesty International. The granite fist, encased in iron bands, comes from a quarry where Arno Breker worked with his students on large-scale ideological sculptures during the Nazi era. The associative connection between this historical artifact and the artist’s own creative work is so effectively achieved that viewers need not even know the fist’s origin to sense how the work relates to the goals and ideals of Amnesty International. By linking the human rights organization thematically to political violence under National Socialism and civil rights violations in the Northern Ireland conflict (to which the object’s title refers), the artist opens up a global field of associations on the subject.
