Hein Sinken | Anemokinetic Object III

The kinetic sculpture by Hein Sinken (b. 1914 in Aachen – d. 1987) was initially installed at the Opera House as part of the “Street Art Program” and was later moved to its current location. It is a prime example of participatory, community-oriented art from the 1970s, when the magic formula of cultural policy was “culture for all.” Not least, the work—which is designed to encourage interaction—remains popular to this day, especially among children. It has retained its playful yet clear functionality and remains comprehensible in its physical and geometric fundamentals. Despite its compact density and the almost meditative slowness of its movements—often triggered by a mere gust of wind—it transcends its own form and corresponds with the surrounding urban spaces.
