Siegfried Neuenhausen | Laid at the feet of the Hanoverians

The installation by Siegfried Neuenhausen (born 1931 in Dormagen) was created to mark the 100th anniversary of Kurt Schwitters’ birth. The bronze relief set into the pavement, inscribed with Schwitters’ words, fulfills its role as a tribute with wit and consistency. At the same time, it highlights the need, in the picturesque, tourist-filled old town with its commercial offerings, to refer not only to the city’s famous son—but also to his non-conformist approach to everyday life, language, and design. Thus, the work takes on a sociopolitical significance and thereby fits into Neuenhausen’s body of work and his aspirations for art. He seems to have placed the quote not merely at the feet of the people of Hanover, but rather in their path—inevitable—as an offering, a reminder, and a playful provocation.
