The Kunstverein Hannover e.V., founded in 1832 by a group of dedicated citizens, is one of the oldest institutions for contemporary art in the German-speaking world. Since then, it has been dedicated to the goal of not only exhibiting art, but also exploring it as a space for social, aesthetic, and societal experience in collaboration with artists and visitors. The association is an independent platform for current artistic practice—locally rooted and internationally oriented.
An active network of around 1,500 members, a dedicated honorary board and advisory board as well as numerous supporters support the work of the association. This community is not only the institution's sponsor, but also its constitutive part.
Located in the historic Künstlerhaus in the heart of Hanover, the Kunstverein carries out its programmatic work through exhibitions, events, publications, and educational projects. The exhibitions are developed in close collaboration with artists, often as site-specific productions. The annual program features approximately four major exhibition projects per year, complemented by the long-standing residency program, discussion forums, and local collaborations.
