Special Exhibition for Families
Piracy Between the North Sea and the Caribbean – Adventures at the State Museum
Discover the real world of pirates with your family.
From November 27, 2026, through May 2, 2027, the exhibition in Hanover invites families on a journey of discovery at the Landesmuseum Hannover. Under the title “Under the Black Flag—Pirates Between the North Sea and the Caribbean,” children and adults will learn how pirates really lived and what lies behind the familiar stories of eye patches, wooden legs, and treasure maps.
Pirates: Between Myth and Reality
Were pirates brave adventurers or feared criminals? This special exhibition explores this question and shows just how varied life on a pirate ship could be.
High-caliber loaned artifacts—some of which are on display in Germany for the first time—offer insights into pirate raids, life aboard the ships, and the dangers at sea. Families will learn about the role that wealth, violence, and the risk of being raided themselves played in the pirates’ daily lives.
What was life like for pirates on their ships?
Life at sea followed its own set of rules. A so-called "pirate code" governed life on board. Some even see in it the early seeds of democratic principles.
The exhibition also shows how pirates influenced the exchange of technologies and ideas, thereby contributing to early globalization. In this way, families discover that the history of piracy goes far beyond exciting tales of seafaring.
A museum visit for the whole family
In conjunction with the special exhibition, the Landesmuseum Hannover is offering an accompanying educational program for families, school classes, and groups. This program allows visitors to explore the exhibition’s themes in greater depth.
Whether it's pirate myths, historical artifacts, or surprising connections—the exhibition offers plenty to talk about during a visit to the museum together.
