UNESCO City of Music: Hanover
Network for musical diversity and international cooperation
Since 2014, Hanover has held the title of UNESCO City of Music, making it part of an international network of creative cities. The designation recognizes the city’s exceptional musical diversity, excellence in music education, and the international connections within Hanover’s music scene. By holding this title, the city commits to sustainably developing its status as a center for music, promoting diversity, and expanding collaborations within the UNESCO network.
In addition to its rich musical history and internationally renowned ensembles, the city is known for its vibrant music scene, which encompasses all genres—from classical music to pop, jazz, and contemporary music.
Music Strategy for the UNESCO City of Music, Hanover
Hanover, the state capital, is the first city in Germany to develop an explicit music strategy. The strategy explicitly recognizes music as a key cultural resource for urban development and is designed to further advance Hanover’s status as a UNESCO City of Music (UCOM) in the coming years. In the future, music is intended to play an even greater role as a driving force for social cohesion, international networking, the creative industries, and urban quality of life. The strategy focuses on five key areas of action: securing and developing infrastructure and spaces for music; further developing funding structures and framework conditions; strengthening support for young musicians, talent development, and career transitions; expanding visibility and international positioning; and strengthening networking and cooperation.
