Emerged. Philipp Klein among the Impressionists

Celebrated by his contemporaries, yet all but forgotten by later generations: the work of the painter Philipp Klein (1871–1907), who died at a young age, is waiting to be rediscovered. The self-taught artist from Mannheim captivated audiences even during his lifetime with his unmistakable sense of light and color. In his atmospheric snapshots, the world seems to dissolve into a shimmering interplay of brightness and movement. 

Art That Has Been Hidden for a Long Time Is Finally on View Again

In collaboration with the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim, the Landesmuseum Hannover is presenting the first comprehensive retrospective of this extraordinary artist. Many of the approximately 100 works on display had been hidden away in private collections for decades and are now on public view for the first time. 

Impressionist Cosmos

The exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into Klein’s diversity: from beach and garden landscapes to striking portraits and multifaceted depictions of women. Complemented by works from his well-known contemporaries—including Lovis Corinth, Max Liebermann, and Paula Modersohn-Becker—Philipp Klein’s well-deserved place in the Impressionist canon is impressively brought to light once again.
