Special Education

Special education addresses specific issues related to particular challenges. In Germany, the tiered system of special education support measures ranges from inclusive and integrated approaches (within mainstream schools) to individualized interventions in specialized special education settings. This approach takes into account each person’s individual abilities and personal limitations in instruction, support, counseling, and therapy. To this end, the program combines content from special education and inclusive education policy with that from related disciplines such as sociology, psychology, medicine, and linguistics and communication studies. At Leibniz University Hannover, in line with the special education specializations offered, the focus is on children, adolescents, and adults in difficult or problematic life situations and with specific impairments in intellectual development, language, learning, or problematic behaviors.
