transdisciplinary center

NIFE Hanover

The region is one of the world's strong locations for biomedical innovation

Founded by Hannover Medical School (MHH), the Hannover University of Veterinary Medicine Foundation (TiHo), and Leibniz University Hannover (LUH) in collaboration with the Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH), NIFE aims to consolidate transdisciplinary research and development in Lower Saxony, with a focus on implant research.

In particular, the NIFE is intended to address the ever-increasing demand for suitable, needs-based implants—a demand driven in no small part by demographic trends—and to explore innovative approaches. This will enable the key challenges in implant research and development—such as biocompatibility, infection, and biofunctionalization—to be addressed in a targeted and forward-looking manner, with the aim of developing implants that are more functional and significantly more durable than those currently available.

In parallel with research and development, the site’s existing preclinical and clinical expertise is leveraged to more quickly translate biomedical findings from the laboratories into market-ready products. The areas of focus range from the development of biomaterials for implants and infection biology to imaging and laser medicine, as well as regenerative therapies.

The NIFE is a transdisciplinary center for implant research that conducts research across multiple organ systems along the entire innovation chain. This pooled expertise is expected to provide significant impetus for the transfer of scientific findings into the commercial sector. With this center, Hannover as a hub for biomedical engineering underscores its outstanding position and becomes all the more attractive for the establishment of national and international life science companies.
