Whether in research, patient care or teaching, the MHH has secured one of the top positions in the leading group of German university hospitals in recent years with its concept of targeted priority funding.
The only purely medically oriented university
The outstanding research achievements of Germany's only purely medically-oriented university have become clear in the Excellence Initiative of the federal and state governments. Funding for the Rebirth Cluster of Excellence on regenerative medicine has been extended until 2017 and a second cluster on hearing research, "Hearing4all", was added in June 2012.
The MHH also focuses on transplantation research, infection and immune research as well as biomedical technology and implants. The more than 1,400 scientists have 30,000 square meters of laboratory space at their disposal on the campus in Groß-Buchholz.
Almost 4,000 students
The Hannover Medical School’s above-average achievements in teaching are evident in the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS) and in Hannibal, the model medical degree program. The HBRS graduate school provides excellent support for the next generation of researchers in the life sciences. The number of applicants shows that the model medical program is particularly popular among first-year students—as is the dentistry program. Nearly 4,000 young people are studying at the MHH (winter semester 2024/25).
2019: More than 60,000 inpatients
MHH shines with top performance in patient care: More than 60,000 inpatients and over 500,000 outpatient treatment contacts were recorded by MHH in 2019. The fact that medical research at the highest level is closely interlinked with modern diagnostic procedures and therapies is paying off. As a supramaximal care hospital, the MHH is one of the hospitals in Germany that treats a particularly large number of seriously ill patients.
The university carries out around 400 organ transplants every year. The MHH is even the European leader in the field of lung transplants. In addition, up to 140 bone marrow and blood stem cell transplants are carried out each year. The MHH is also a world leader in cochlear implants, electronic stimulation prostheses in the inner ear.
The staff at the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS) coordinate all graduate programs at MHH and its partner institutions. The HBRS also offers a Career Service with an extensive program of workshops and seminars.
