As an independent, nonprofit research institute for photonics and laser technology, the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is dedicated to innovative research, development, and consulting. The LZH was founded in 1986 with the goal of conducting interdisciplinary research and development in the field of laser technology, bridging the gap between research and industry, and training specialists in close collaboration with industry.
Through its smart photonics applications, the LZH offers solutions to current and future challenges. Scientists and engineers collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner across the entire process chain: from component development for specific laser systems or quantum technologies to process development for a wide variety of laser applications, such as in medical and agricultural technology or the mobility sector.
The LZH fosters strong collaboration between basic science, applied research, and industry. Small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular, benefit from the LZH’s range of research and services. Through collaborative projects, they gain access to new technological knowledge, national and international networks, and public funding. The services offered by the LZH enable these companies to compensate for any gaps in their R&D capabilities. As part of the Lower Saxony ADDITIV project, the LZH, in collaboration with the Institute for Integrated Production in Hanover (IPH), supports companies in Lower Saxony in introducing, implementing, and further developing 3D printing
Knowledge transfer also involves placing talented individuals in the business sector and other research institutions—and over time, this has led to the development of a substantial network. To date, 18 successful spin-offs have emerged from the institute, creating a total of more than 500 jobs.
Hanover as a hub for optics and photonics.
In addition to the LZH, other institutions and companies also help shape Hannover as a hub for optics and photonics: The PhoenixD and QuantumFrontiers Clusters of Excellence, in which the LZH participates, bring together research on precision optics, light, and quantum technologies from Hannover and Braunschweig. With the OPTICUM research building at Leibniz University Hannover, a shared space for interdisciplinary optics and photonics research is taking shape in Hannover-Marienwerder. Laboratories, test facilities, and large-scale equipment there will bring together expertise that was previously scattered across various locations.
In addition, there are numerous companies operating in this industry. They manufacture specialized optics or the equipment needed for them, develop and build lasers—for example, for drone defense—or use lasers in manufacturing.
Hanover thus brings together research, education, and industrial applications in a compact setting.
