Fraunhofer ITEM

At the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology and Experimental Medicine (ITEM), the focus is on respiratory research.

Research aimed at developing new drugs quickly to combat unknown pathogens.

Identifying pollutants in the air in good time and assessing their risk to humans, diagnosing respiratory diseases and contributing to the development of new medicines - these are important goals of the 300 or so ITEM employees.

Contract research for health

For over 35 years, Fraunhofer ITEM has been conducting research for clients in government and industry. Its research activities range from studies on consumer protection, occupational and environmental toxicology, to preclinical and clinical drug research and development, as well as the production of biopharmaceuticals for clinical research. Fraunhofer ITEM conducts early-phase clinical trials for the approval of drugs used to treat allergies, asthma, and COPD. Special facilities are available for this purpose, such as pollen chambers where the effects of medications for hay fever are studied.

New Research Center – CRC Hannover

Together with Hannover Medical School and the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, Fraunhofer ITEM has established the “Clinical Research Center Hannover” (CRC Hannover). The CRC Hannover offers an optimal infrastructure for early-phase clinical trials (Phases I and II). Here, scientists and physicians can carry out the crucial step in translational medical research: testing the efficacy and tolerability of new drugs in humans.
