The University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover (TiHo) Foundation is the oldest and only independent veterinary training institution in Germany. The university was founded in 1778 as the Roß-Arzney School. Since the beginning of 2003, TiHo has been a foundation-run university. With its transfer to the governance of a foundation under public law, TiHo has gained a degree of autonomy and increased its flexibility.

Geographically, TiHo’s six clinics, 19 institutes, and three departments are spread across two locations in Hanover. TiHo also operates three branch campuses in Ruthe, in southern Hanover; in Bakum, near Vechta; and in Büsum on the North Sea coast. Including doctoral candidates and PhD students, approximately 2,400 veterinary medicine students are enrolled at the foundation-funded university. In addition, there are biology students who are trained in collaboration with Leibniz University Hannover and Hannover Medical School.
Numerous research focuses
TiHo’s research focuses on infection biology, clinical research, systems neuroscience, as well as animal health and food quality. In addition to research and teaching, providing services is one of TiHo’s core missions. The range of services offered is broad. Patient care at TiHo’s six clinics plays a particularly important role. In addition, various TiHo facilities offer pathological, biochemical, toxicological, and laboratory diagnostic testing.
