As an independent, non-profit research institute for photonics and laser technology, the Laser Zentrum Hannover e.V. (LZH) is dedicated to innovative research, development, and consulting.
Laser Center Hannover (LZH)
The LZH was founded in 1986 with the goal of conducting interdisciplinary research and development in the field of laser technology, bridging the gap between research and industry, and training professionals in close collaboration with industry.
The interdisciplinary collaboration between scientists and engineers enables innovative approaches in various fields: from component development for specific laser systems to process development for laser applications, such as in medical technology or lightweight construction in the automotive sector. The LZH currently employs nearly 200 staff members. The LZH receives its core funding from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, Transportation, and Digitalization.
The LZH’s areasof innovation represent the future of photonics and laser technology. In these fields, the LZH identifies and initiates trends, thereby making a significant contribution to the advancement of science, business, and industry. In these fields, LZH scientists are working, among other things, on automated, precise, and intelligent processes for digital production. They develop lasers for use in space, approaches for laser-based pest control, enable customized implants or assistive devices, and explore ways to conserve energy and materials, as well as much more. Always at the forefront of their focus: new applications and the direct transfer to practical use.
The LZH fosters strong collaboration between basic science, applied research, and industry. Small and medium-sized enterprises, in particular, benefit from the LZH’s range of research and services. Through collaborative projects, they gain access to new technological knowledge, national and international networks, and public funding. The services offered by the LZH enable these companies to compensate for any gaps in their R&D capabilities.

Knowledge transfer also involves placing talented individuals in the business sector and other research institutions—a process that has, over time, fostered a substantial network. To date, 18 successful spin-offs have emerged from the institute, creating a total of approximately 500 jobs. The institute’s support for young talent begins as early as high school: guided tours for school classes, school internships, participation in the IdeenExpo, and the annual Future Day give students an early glimpse into the exciting working world of a research institute. Afterward, entry into the LZH is possible through traditional vocational training as well as through a Voluntary Scientific Year, undergraduate and graduate theses, and student assistant positions and internships for students. In initial vocational training, the LZH cooperates with the local vocational school and, in this way, also teaches laser technology to future employees of small and medium-sized enterprises in the Region Hannover.
