Hanover State Opera

The Hanover State Opera is one of the city’s most important cultural landmarks and impresses with its late-Classical architecture. The historic opera house was built between 1845 and 1852 and, after its destruction during World War II, was faithfully reconstructed. Today, a diverse program of opera, ballet, and concerts awaits you.

Hanover Playhouse

The Schauspielhaus Hannover is the main venue of Schauspiel Hannover and opened in 1992 on Prinzenstraße. The modern building, with its striking white-clad facade, seats approximately 630 audience members. The repertoire includes classical dramas, contemporary plays, and innovative productions that address current social issues.

August Kestner Museum

The August Kestner Museum invites visitors on a journey through some 6,000 years of art and cultural history. The collections include Egyptian and ancient art, works of arts and crafts, modern design, as well as coins and medals. Particularly striking is the glass-and-concrete facade—a designated historic landmark—that envelops the historic museum building. The museum is centrally located next to the New City Hall.

Sprengel Museum Hanover

The Sprengel Museum Hannover is one of the leading museums of modern and contemporary art. The collection includes paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs, and media art from the 20th century to the present. Artists represented include Pablo Picasso, Kurt Schwitters, Max Ernst, and Niki de Saint Phalle, among others. Temporary exhibitions offer fascinating insights into various art movements and creative perspectives.

The red thread

The Red Thread takes you on a roughly 4.2-kilometer route to 36 points of interest in downtown Hanover. The red line on the sidewalk makes it easy to explore the city on your own and at your own pace. Along the way, you’ll pass the Opera House, the Marktkirche, the New City Hall, and the famous Nanas on the banks of the Leine, among other sights. An accompanying brochure provides additional information about each stop.

Hop-On, Hop-Off City Tour of Hanover

On the hop-on, hop-off city tour, you’ll get to know Hanover in comfort from a double-decker bus. An audio guide provides interesting facts about sights such as the New City Hall, the Old Town, the Herrenhausen Gardens, and Lake Maschsee. You can get off at any of the various stops to explore the area and then hop back on later. The entire tour lasts about 1.5 hours and, weather permitting, includes open-top rides.
