Maschpark

Maschpark, a historic park in the heart of Hanover, covers ten hectares and was laid out around 1900. The city’s first municipal park is located south of the Old Town and directly adjacent to the New City Hall. It is an impressive example of late 19th-century German landscape architecture. In the center of the park lies the picturesque Maschteich, which enchants visitors with its water lily bay and an artificial rocky island.

Creation and design

The park was created on a former floodplain of the Leine and Ihme rivers, which had previously been used as a hayfield. Planning began in 1895 as part of the construction of the New City Hall and was carried out by Julius Trip, a leading landscape architect. To this day, the park has retained its original form and features a wide variety of plant species, including evergreen rhododendrons, magnolias, and impressive large trees such as American red oaks and silver maples.

Cultural significance and twin cities

In 1985, Maschpark was designated the “Park of Sister Cities,” with paths named after Hannover’s sister cities, such as Hiroshima, Bristol, and Leipzig. The park not only offers a place to relax but also serves as a symbol of international friendship and cooperation.

Maschpark is an important part of Hannover's cultural heritage that delights both locals and visitors with its historical and scenic beauty. Together with the adjacent New City Hall, it forms one of the most striking architectural ensembles in downtown Hannover.
